The local Xen console, shown in Figure 5-2, is limited; very few changes can be made from the local console. You ll need to use XenCenter to reap the full management capabilities.

Identify an ISO Library Unless you re installing your VMs from a local disk or CD/DVD drive, you ll need to identify an ISO Library (Repository) to XenServer. You have two possibilities for this repository: a Windows File Share via Common Internet File System (CIFS) or a UNIX-type Network File System (NFS) share. The one you select depends on where your ISO files are stored (a remote Windows system or a remote UNIX/Linux system).

To identify an ISO Library to your XenServer. 1. Select applet ECC200 the XenServer system that you want to install the new VM to by clicking it once. 2.

Click the New Storage button on the XenCenter menu.. The screen shown in Figure 5-3 appears and prompts you for the type of storage to identify to XenServer.. Under I tomcat ECC200 SO library, select either Windows File Sharing (CIFS), as shown, or NFS, and then click Next. On the next screen, name your ISO library and supply the share name to XenServer (see Figure 5-4).

If your CI FS or NFS share require non-anonymous credentials to connect to the share that you identified, select Use Different User Name and enter the username and password in the spaces provided. 6. Click Finish.

Your ISO library will be available when you begin to install VMs, as shown in the next section. When you return to the XenCenter console, you ll see that your ISO library is now listed, as shown in Figure 5-5 (left pane)..

FIGURE 5-5. XenServer s asset list. New Virtual Machine Wizard Now you re ready to create a new VM:. 1. Click New VM from the XenServer console. The first screen that appears in the New Virtual Machine Wizard is the one prompting you to select an Operating System Template from which to install your VM. 2. Select an operating system from the Template list.

If your operating system isn t listed (ours isn t) go to step 3. If it is listed, skip step 3 and proceed to step 4..

6. As shown in Figure 5-9, select the number of virtual CPUs and initial memory allocation for your new VM. Click Next to continue.

7. Click Add to create a new Virtual Disk for your new VM. 8.

Select a size for the new Virtual Disk (2.0GB, for example), select the storage location for your new VM (local storage shown), and click OK. See Figure 5-10.

After you ve selected the size and storage location of your virtual disk, you re returned to the Virtual Machine Wizard, as shown in Figure 5-11.. . Your VM is now complete. You may, on completion of this wizard, begin installing your new VM s operating system or uncheck the Start VM Automatically box and continue. 11.

Click Finish to complete the wizard. Upon completion of the New Virtual Machine Wizard, your new VM is created with the parameters and details given while stepping through the wizard. Your new VM is listed in the XenServer asset list, as shown in Figure 5-13.

To start your new VM, select it with a single mouse click and click Start from the XenCenter menu. The VM will boot from the ISO image selected during the wizard. Refer to the Appendix, Virtual Machine Installation, for generic VM operating system installation instructions.
